All Flesh is Grass

“That is indeed correct. You catch on very neatly.”

“And you are trying to break through this time barrier so you can reach my Earth?”

“To reach your Earth,” they told me.

“But why?”

— Совершенно верно. Вы очень точно это уловили.

— И вы стараетесь пробиться сквозь барьер времени, чтобы проникнуть на мою Землю?

— Да, так.

— А зачем?

“To co-operate with you. To form a partnership. We need living space and if you give us living space, we'll give our knowledge; we need technology, for we have no hands, and with our knowledge you can shape new technologies and those technologies can be used for the benefit of each of us. We can go together into other worlds. Eventually a long chain of many Earths will be linked together and the races in them linked, as well, in a common aim and purpose.”

— Мы хотим с вами сотрудничать. Заключить соглашение. Нам нужно жизненное пространство, дайте его нам, а мы взамен дадим вам наши познания; нам нужна техника, ведь у нас нет рук, а вы, пользуясь нашими знаниями, создадите новую технику  — она пойдет на благо и вам, и нам. Вместе мы сможем проникнуть и в другие миры. В конце концов множество Земель сольется в единую цепь, и все те, кто их населяет, тоже объединятся, у них будет одна цель, одни стремления.

A cold lump of lead blossomed in my guts, and despite the lump of lead I felt that I was empty and there was a vile metallic taste that coated tongue and mouth. A partnership, and who would be in charge? Living space, and how much would they leave for us? Other worlds, and what would happen in those other worlds?

“You have a lot of knowledge?”

Где-то под ложечкой у меня зрел холодный, свинцово-тяжелый ком; я ощущал странную пустоту внутри и мерзкий металлический вкус во рту. Сотрудничество, соглашение  — а кто будет играть главную роль? Жизненное пространство  — а сколько его останется для нас? Иные миры  — а что произойдет там, в иных мирах?

— Вы много знаете?

“Very much,” they said. “It is a thing we pay much attention to—the absorption of all knowledge.”

“And you're very busy collecting it from us. You are the people who are hiring all the readers?”

“It is so much more efficient,” they explained, “than the way we used to do it, with results indifferent at best. This way is more certain and a great deal more selective.”

— Очень много. Это для нас важнее всего: мы познаем, поглощаем, впитываем знания.

— Вы очень усердно собираете их и у нас. Ведь это вы нанимаете чтецов?

— Да, и этот способ гораздо лучше всех прежних, раньше мы получали весьма посредственные результаты. Теперешний путь вернее, и притом легче отбирать самое важное.

“Ever since the time,” I said, “that you got Gerald Sherwood to make the telephones.”

“The telephones,” they told me, “provide direct communication. All we had before was the tapping of the mind.”

“You mean you had mental contact with people of our Earth?

Perhaps for a good long time?”

— Так пошло с тех пор, как вы обучили Джералда Шервуда делать телефоны?

— Телефоны позволяют нам непосредственно общаться с жителями вашей Земли,  — был ответ.  — До этого мы могли только перехватывать мысли.

— Так вы и раньше понимали людей? Может, вы уже давным-давно читаете наши мысли?

“Oh, yes,” they said, most cheerfully. “With very many people, for many, many years. But the sad part of it was that it was a one-way business. We had contact with them, but by and large, they had none with us. Most of them were not aware of us at all and others, who were more sensitive, were aware of us only in a vague and fumbling way.”

“But you picked those minds.”

— Да-да!  — весело откликнулись Цветы.  — Мы понимали очень многих людей и уже много, много лет назад. Но беда в том, что это были отношения односторонние. Мы слышали и понимали людей, а они нас  — нет. Большинство даже и не подозревало о нашем существовании, а более чуткие кое-что воспринимали, но только очень смутно и сбивчиво.

— Однако вы подслушивали их мысли.

“Of course we did,” they said. “But we had to content ourselves with what was in the minds. We could not manage to direct them to specific areas of interest.”

“You tried nudging them, of course.”

“There were some we nudged with fair success. There were others we could nudge, but they moved in wrong directions.

And there were many, most of them perhaps, who stubbornly remained unaware of us, no matter what we did. It was discouraging.

— Да, конечно. Но нам приходилось довольствоваться тем, что они думали сами. Мы не могли направлять их мысли, пробуждать у них те или иные интересы.

— Уж конечно, вы старались их подтолкнуть в ту сторону, куда вам требовалось.

— Да, подталкивали, и с некоторыми получалось очень удачно. Другие почему-то двигались совсем не туда, куда надо. И многие, очень многие упорно оставались глухи, все наши старания пропадали понапрасну. Это было очень печально.

“You contact these minds through certain thin spots, I suppose. You could not have done it through the normal boundaries.”

“No, we had to make maximum usage of the thin spots that we found.”
