Между тем, нормандский герцог, придав коронацией в Вестминстере легитимный статус своему режиму, проявил себя как продолжатель объединительных традиций государственного строительства, имевших место и в старой, англосаксонской Англии. Сплоченность и решимость нормандцев, талант их руководителя, поддержка общественного мнения и церкви, наконец, разгром англосаксов по частям (порой руками их же соотечественников, переходивших на сторону нового короля), гибель, вытеснение и ассимиляция прежней элиты — все это привело к тому, что нормандцы, как и в других странах (юг Италии, например), успешно «надстроились» над завоеванным народом, а потом и слились с ним, повернув ход исторического развития Англии в ином направлении.
