A coffee solution was treated with acetate of lead, “sulpheretted hydrogen” (now known as hydrogen sulfide), and ammonia. The product was pure caffeine: “It presents itself in the form of long, silky needles; is fusible, volatile and soluble in water, alcohol and ether.”
