He was a guy she thought was cute who was on the werewolf TV show. I never told her I’d seen him at the studio when I was shooting The Secret Circle, and he was all of five-eight. I couldn’t see Brook going out with someone who wasn’t taller than her.

“Fair enough. I’ll just have to let Hannah go,” I said, and sighed.

Brook didn’t buy my acting abilities for one moment. She knew that if Hannah Minacci showed up, we would be done. That was until I got to know Hannah. She might be high-maintenance, and I would have to beg for Brook to come back to me.

“I think we got off track. What did you want to do about Tracy?” Brook asked.

Tami said my first idea was always wrong. If that were the case, then a threesome with Brook and Tracy was out of the question. The problem was it was my first through infinity idea. I kept going back to when Halle had joined us. Brook had been hesitant about a little bi action but seemed to enjoy herself once things heated up. I knew that Tracy wasn’t opposed to it.

“We could do a threesome,” I blurted.

“Dammit! I owe Tracy five bucks. You are such a disappointment sometimes,” Brook complained.

“Yes, I am. Maybe I’ve been bad and should go to your room,” I said in a little boy voice.

I could almost see her eye-roll followed by ‘the look.’

“When do you get back?”

“Tomorrow evening. Why don’t you come over? I haven’t seen you in a full day, and I’m starting to have withdrawal. I need my Brook fix.”

“Should I bring Tracy?”

I bit my tongue. This was a test, and I almost failed it.

“No. I only want you.”

“I guess you’re not quite the disappointment I first thought. Text me when you land, and I’ll meet you at your place.”

We chatted some more like all teenage couples do. I sort of felt sorry about how much I’d teased my little brother when he seemed to be on the phone constantly with his new girlfriend. However, this felt normal. I needed more normal.

Chapter 11 – Dancing With The Devil Sunday September 18

We’d just finished eating at a pancake house and had gotten to know some of the coaches better. We had an appointment to talk to academic advisors, and then we’d learn about weight training and nutrition. I was stopped by a man in a University of Oklahoma polo shirt.

“I was wondering if I could talk to you for a moment before you go back to campus?” he asked.

“The bus is leaving,” I said.

“Please. I’ll make sure everyone gets to campus.”

“What’s this about?”

“I want to talk to you about the University of Oklahoma and you attending here.”

“I don’t think this is the time or place for something like that,” I said and pushed past the man.

Before I got on the bus, John Mercer, the director of football operations, stopped me.

“What did he want?”

“He wanted to talk to me about attending school here.”

Mr. Mercer looked concerned.

“Do me a favor and don’t meet with him,” he said.

“How come?” I asked.

“I’ll tell you once we’re alone.”

He really didn’t need to tell me; I had a suspicion I knew what the guy wanted. I got on the bus, and we took the short drive to campus.

After we’d gotten the academics, training, and nutrition out of the way, we had a meeting with the coaching staff. When I say “we,” it included Tim, Wolf, and their parents. They set the stage nicely. Wolf, Tim, and I sat at a small table with just Coach Michaels. Our parents and the coaching staff sat behind us. It made us feel like we were the decision-makers.

“First of all, I want to apologize for what happened, David. In all my years of doing this, I thought I’d seen it all. I never imagined a parent would attack another recruit. I hope we can get past that,” Coach Michaels said.

“Don’t worry, I’m good. There are a lot of things I like about Oklahoma,” I shared.

“I’m glad to hear that,” Wolf said. “Tim and I were talking, and we like Oklahoma. It has everything we’re looking for, as far as education goes, and we feel at home here.”

“The athletic dorm is outstanding,” Tim added.

“That sounds good,” Coach Michaels said and then smiled. “I have to admit that when we heard the three of you wanted to play ball together, I was hesitant at first. I can’t remember the last time we took three kids from the same high school in a recruiting class.

“That momentarily made me pause and consider if this would work. Then we saw the recent game film and reviewed reports from the people we’ve had at your games over the past two years. If I were being honest, I wish Ty Wilson had joined you this weekend. If things go our way, we would like to offer all four of you scholarships.

“I guess I’d like to ask what you estimate the chances are that we have a shot at you joining us,” Coach Michaels asked.

Tim and Wolf looked at me.
