With little to do, time became an intolerable burden to them This naturally made them still lazier They sank into a physical lethargy (они погрузились в физическую летаргию; to sink — погружаться; опускаться) which there was no escaping (от которой не было избавления), and which made them rebel at the performance of the smallest chore (и которая вызывала у них протест при выполнении малейшей ежедневной работы; chore — ежедневные обязанности, ежедневная работа /по дому или в подсобном хозяйстве/; трудное задание, неприятная работа). One morning when it was his turn to cook the common breakfast Weatherbee rolled out of his blankets (Уэзерби выкатился из одеял), and to the snoring of his companion, lighted first the slush-lamp and then the fire (и, под храп своего компаньона, зажег сначала лампу на жире, а потом огонь /в печке/). The kettles were frozen hard (котелки сильно замерзли), and there was no water in the cabin with which to wash (а в избушке не было воды, чтобы помыться).

intolerable [In'tOlrqbl], lethargy ['leTqGI], companion [kqm'pxnjqn]

With little to do, time became an intolerable burden to them. This naturally made them still lazier. They sank into a physical lethargy which there was no escaping, and which made them rebel at the performance of the smallest chore. One morning when it was his turn to cook the common breakfast, Weatherbee rolled out of his blankets, and to the snoring of his companion, lighted first the slush-lamp and then the fire. The kettles were frozen hard, and there was no water in the cabin with which to wash.

But he did not mind that (но он не обратил на это внимание/он не беспокоился об этом; to mind — заботиться; обращать внимание; беспокоиться). Waiting for it to thaw (дожидаясь, пока она оттает = оттает вода), he sliced the bacon and plunged into the hateful task of bread-making (он нарезал бекон и ушел с головой в ненавистное задание изготовления хлеба; to plunge into — погружаться в; втянуться, уйти с головой в). Cuthfert had been slyly watching through his half-closed lids (Катферт коварно наблюдал сквозь полуприкрытые веки). Consequently there was a scene (вследствие возникла сцена), in which they fervently blessed each other (в которой они с жаром проклинали друг друга;

to bless — благословлять; проклинать), and agreed, thenceforth, that each do his own cooking (и договорились, что впредь каждый будет готовить пищу для себя). A week later, Cuthfert neglected his morning ablutions (неделю спустя Катферт пренебрег своим утренним умыванием), but none the less complacently ate the meal which he had cooked (но тем не менее самодовольно съел еду, которую он приготовил; none the less — тем не менее). Weatherbee grinned (Уэзерби ухмыльнулся). After that the foolish custom of washing passed out of their lives
