Maggie tore her fascinated gaze from a steadily throbbing pulse on his forehead. Everything had seemed so perfect when she had met Paul fortnight ago. She’d seen his luxury flat, listened all about his fabulous holidays and marvelled at his career prospects. Yes, he had seemed quite a catch.

But a girl needed more (но девушке нужно больше), and Paul hadn’t disappointed her (и Пол не разочаровал ее). Paul broke into her thoughts.

‘You’re wandering,’ he pointed out, ‘Move over or you’ll end up on the wrong side of the road.’

That’s more like it (это больше похоже на то /что нужно/), thought Maggie (подумала Мэгги; to think) as she righted the car (выправляя машину; right – правильный, верный; to right – выпрямлять, исправлять

). He had taken care to pitch his voice low (он постарался сделать свой голос тише; care – забота, попечение; внимательность, осторожность, тщательность; to take care – заботиться; стараться; to pitch – настроить /звук/, придать ему определенную высоту; low – низкий; тихий) to avoid alarming her (чтобы не напугать ее; to avoid – избежать; to alarm – встревожить; взволновать; напугать).

That’s more like it, thought Maggie as she righted the car. He had taken care to pitch his voice low to avoid alarming her.

‘All right now, Paul (теперь нормально, Пол)?’ She glanced at him anxiously for a smile of approval (она взглянула на него в надежде на одобрительную улыбку; anxious – тревожный; сильно желающий чего-л.; approval – одобрение).
