A short time before they reached the Baths of Caracalla the carriage stopped, Peppino opened the door, and the count and Franz alighted.	Немного не доезжая цирка Каракаллы карета остановилась. Пеппино отворил дверцу, граф и Франц вышли.
"In ten minutes," said the count to his companion, "we shall be there."	- Через десять минут мы будем на месте, - сказал граф своему спутнику.

Five minutes elapsed, during which Franz saw the shepherd going along a narrow path that led over the irregular and broken surface of the Campagna; and finally he disappeared in the midst of the tall red herbage, which seemed like the bristling mane of an enormous lion. Franz and the count in their turn then advanced along the same path, which, at the distance of a hundred paces, led them over a declivity to the bottom of a small valley.	Они двинулись по той же тропинке; пройдя шагов сто по отлогому склону, они очутились в маленькой долине.
They then perceived two men conversing in the obscurity.	Вскоре они заметили двух человек, переговаривавшихся в темноте.
"Ought we to go on?" asked Franz of the count; "or shall we wait awhile?"	- Идти дальше, - спросил Франц, - или, может быть, надо подождать?
"Let us go on; Peppino will have warned the sentry of our coming."	- Идем, идем; Пеппино, вероятно, предупредил часового.
One of the two men was Peppino, and the other a bandit on the lookout.	И в самом деле, один из разговаривавших оказался Пеппино, другой - разбойник, стоявший на страже.
Franz and the count advanced, and the bandit saluted them.	Граф и Франц подошли к ним, разбойник поклонился.
"Your excellency," said Peppino, addressing the count, "if you will follow me, the opening of the catacombs is close at hand."	- Ваша светлость, - сказал Пеппино, - угодно вам идти за мной? Вход в катакомбы в двух шагах отсюда.
"Go on, then," replied the count.	- Хорошо, - сказал граф, - ступай вперед.
They came to an opening behind a clump of bushes and in the midst of a pile of rocks, by which a man could scarcely pass.	Вскоре за кустами, среди камней, показалось отверстие, в которое с трудом мог пролезть человек.
Peppino glided first into this crevice; after they got along a few paces the passage widened.	Пеппино первый полез в расщелину; уже через несколько шагов подземный ход стал расширяться.
Peppino passed, lighted his torch, and turned to see if they came after him.	Тогда он остановился, зажег факел и обернулся.
The count first reached an open space and Franz followed him closely.	Граф первый проник в это подобие отдушины, Франц последовал за ним.
