9. to happen

В русском языке звучит "это произошло с ним", поэтому трудно избавиться от иллюзии2, что- to happen требует предлога with. Он, однако, требует предлога to:

I never realized what a kiss could be, This could only happen to me, Can't you see, can't you see?3

Whatever happened to our love? I wish I understood. It used to be so nice, it used to be so good.4

10. to help

Очень простой глагол. После него обычно идет комупомогать, то есть прямое дополнение (без предлога) и помогать

что делать, то есть инфинитив (без частицы to). Таким образом, этот глагол вообще не требует ничего дополнительного:

If I fell in love with you, Would you promise to be true And help me understand.1

Help me get my feet back on the ground.2

Если вы забыли, что инфинитив после to help идет голый, - не беда, в британском языке можно после to help поставить и не голый, а с частицей to. Единственное, чего нельзя делать ни под каким видом, - это говорить "help TO me", "we helped FOR him" и другие подобные вещи, то есть ставить предлог перед прямым дополнением (см. примеры).

11. to join

Он, вообще говоря, не относится к базовой лексике, но так как в последнее время всем часто приходится заполнять анкеты, составлять резюме и проходить собеседования (и все это на английском языке), временами приходится говорить что-нибудь вроде "вступил в профсоюз". Так вот, этот глагол вовсе не требует предлога in, как и никакого другого:

The piper's calling you to join him Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow.3

My, my, my, I'm so happy I'm gonna join the band.4

12. to laugh и to smile

Смеяться над кем и улыбаться кому требуют одного и того же предлога at:

On the corner is a banker with a motorcar The little children laugh at him behind his back.1

You tell lies thinking I can't see, You can't cry 'cause you're laughing at me.2

I smiled at you, You smiled atme And we're on our way No we can't turn back.3

13 и 14. to listen и to wait

О том, каких предлогов требуют to listen (слушать) и to wait (ждать), говорилось уже сверх всякой меры. Тем не менее не только студент X, но вместе с ним и студент Y регулярно забывают о наличии там хоть каких-то предлогов.

Listen. Jesus, I don't like what I see. All ask is that you listen to me.4

Listen, Jesus, tothe warning I give. Please, remember that I want us to live.5

So please listen to me if you wanna stay mine, I can't help my feelings, I'll go out of my mind.6
