‘A rat,’ said the old man in shaking tones – ‘a rat (крыса, – сказал он дрожащим голосом, – крыса; tone – тон; манера говорить). It passed me on the stairs (она обогнала меня на лестнице; to pass – идти; проходить, проезжать; обгонять, опережать).’

His wife sat up in bed listening (его жена сидела в постели, прислушиваясь). A loud knock resounded through the house

(громкий стук разнесся по дому; to resound – громко звучать, раздаваться; оглашаться).

‘It’s Herbert!’ she screamed (это Герберт, – завопила она). ‘It’s Herbert (это Герберт)!’

She ran to the door, but her husband was before her, and catching her by the arm, held her tightly (она побежала к двери, но ее муж опередил ее: «был перед ней» и, схватив за руку, крепко ее держал; to run; to hold).

‘What are you going to do?’ he whispered hoarsely

(что ты собираешься делать? – хрипло прошептал он).

‘It’s my boy; it’s Herbert!’ she cried, struggling mechanically (это мой мальчик; это Герберт! – кричала она, машинально вырываясь; to struggle – бороться, отбиваться; mechanically – механически; автоматически; машинально). ‘I forgot it was two miles away (я забыла, что это в двух милях отсюда). What are you holding me for (зачем ты меня держишь)? Let go (пусти). I must open the door (я должна открыть дверь).’

‘For God’s sake don’t let it in,’ cried the old man, trembling (Бога ради, не пускай это в дом, – вскричал он, дрожа).

‘You’re afraid of your own son,’ she cried, struggling (ты боишься своего собственного сына, – кричала она, вырываясь). ‘Let me go (пусти меня). I’m coming, Herbert; I’m coming (я иду, Герберт; я иду).’

 ‘What’s that?’ cried the old woman, starting up.

‘It’s Herbert!’ she screamed. ‘It’s Herbert!’

She ran to the door, but her husband was before her, and catching her by the arm, held her tightly.

‘What are you going to do?’ he whispered hoarsely.

‘It’s my boy; it’s Herbert!’ she cried, struggling mechanically. ‘I forgot it was two miles away. What are you holding me for? Let go. I must open the door.’

‘For God’s sake don’t let it in,’ cried the old man, trembling.

‘You’re afraid of your own son,’ she cried, struggling. ‘Let me go. I’m coming, Herbert; I’m coming.’
