I could only judge that all had perished (я мог лишь предположить: «судить», что все они погибли), and my heart smote me sorely (и мое сердце раздиралось укором: «и мое сердце ударило меня болезненно»; to smite — ударять; поражать; карать) that I had not been there to perish with them (что не был там, чтобы погибнуть вместе с ними).
