She drew a candle from the grub-box and lighted it. One look at her illuminated face was enough for Messner. In the small cabin the widest limit was only a matter of several steps, and the next moment she was alongside of him. She deliberately held the candle close to his face and stared at him out of eyes wide with fear and recognition. He smiled quietly back at her.

"What are you looking for, Tess?" the doctor called.

"Hairpins," she replied, passing on and rummaging in a clothes-bag on the bunk.

They served their meal on their grub-box, sitting on Messner's grub-box and facing him. He had stretched out on his bunk to rest, lying on his side, his head on his arm. In the close quarters it was as though the three were together at table.

"What part of the States do you come from (из какой части Штатов вы приехали/прибыли)?" Messner asked (спросил Месснер).

"San Francisco (Сан-Франциско)," answered the doctor (ответил врач). "I've been in here two years, though (хотя/однако я здесь /уже/ два года)."

The woman looked at him appealingly (женщина посмотрела на него умоляюще), but he smiled and went on (но он улыбнулся и продолжал):

"Berkeley, you know (Беркли, вы знаете = знаете ли)."

The other man was becoming interested (другой мужчина становился заинтересованным = в нем пробудился интерес).

"U. C. (Калифорнийский университет; U. C. — University of California)?" he asked (спросил он).

"Yes, Class of 86 (да, выпуск 86 /года/)."

"I meant faculty (я имел в виду преподавателей; faculty — факультет; профессорско-преподавательский состав; to mean — думать, подразумевать)," the doctor explained (объяснил врач). "You remind me of the type (вы напоминаете мне этот тип)."

"I hail from California myself," was Messner's announcement.

The woman looked at him appealingly, but he smiled and went on:

"Berkeley, you know."

The other man was becoming interested.

"U. C.?" he asked.

"Yes, Class of 86."

"I meant faculty," the doctor explained. "You remind me of the type."

"Sorry to hear you say so (жаль слышать, /что/ вы говорите так)," Messner smiled back (Месснер улыбнулся ему). "Thank you (спасибо)," said Messner (сказал Месснер). Then, turning to her companion (затем, повернувшись к ее спутнику), "By the way, Doctor (кстати, доктор), what is your name (как ваша фамилия/имя), if I may ask (если я могу спросить = разрешите спросить)?"

"Haythorne (Хейторн), if you'll take my word for it (если вы поверите мне на слово). I gave up cards with civilization (я забросил /визитные/ карточки /вместе/ с цивилизацией; to give up — оставить, отказаться; бросить /привычку и т. п./)."

"And Mrs. Haythorne (и миссис Хейторн)," Messner smiled and bowed (Месснер улыбнулся и поклонился).

She flashed a look at him (она бросила взгляд на него; to flash — сверкать; пронестись; прийти в голову) that was more anger than appeal (который был более гнев/раздражение, чем просьба/мольба).

Haythorne was about to ask the other's name (Хейторн собирался спросить фамилию/имя другого /человека/). His mouth had opened to form the question (его рот открылся, /чтобы/ произнести: «сформировать» вопрос) when Messner cut him off (когда Месснер прервал: «обрезал/отсек»; to cut off).
