27 Word length

A commonly observed property in language is that the most frequently occurring words often happen to be the shortest. Conversely, the longer a word is, the less frequently it tends to occur. This table shows results from the French corpus used for this dictionary. Over 9 million of the 23 million words in the corpus are one or two characters long. There are about 1.2 million three-letter words, and only about 84,000 fourteen-letter words. The table also lists the number of distinct word forms ("word types") and the most commonly occurring words for each word length.
