In the huge new cemetery, some two miles distant (на громадном новом кладбище, где-то в двух милях от них; distant – дальний; отдаленный), the old people buried their dead (старики похоронили своего сына: «старые люди похоронили своего мертвого»), and came back to the house steeped in shadow and silence (и вернулись в дом, окутанный тенями и тишиной; to steep – погружать/

It was all over so quickly that at first they could hardly realize it (все закончилось так быстро, что сначала они едва это могли понять), and remained in a state of expectation as though of something else to happen (и остались в состоянии ожидания, словно еще что-то должно было случиться) – something else which was to lighten this load, too heavy for old hearts to bear (что-то еще, что должно было облегчить эту ношу, слишком тяжелую для старых сердец; to bear – носить, нести).

But the days passed, and expectation gave place to resignation

(но дни шли, и ожидание сменилось смирением; to give – давать; place – место; to give place – уступать, сменяться) – the hopeless resignation of the old, sometimes miscalled apathy (безнадежным смирением стариков, что иногда неверно называют апатией). Sometimes they hardly exchanged a word, for now they had nothing to talk about (иногда они едва обменивались /парой/ слов, ибо теперь им не о чем было говорить), and their days were long to weariness (и дни их были утомительно длинны: «длинны до утомительности»; weariness – усталость, истощение; скука, утомительность; weary – усталый, изнуренный, утомленный).

‘Come back,’ he said tenderly (иди сюда: «вернись», – нежно сказал он). ‘You will be cold (ты замерзнешь; cold – холодный).’
