Contempt showed instantly in Womble's face (презрение показалось немедленно на лице Уомбла). At last (наконец), beneath him in vileness (ниже него в подлости; vile — низкий, подлый), had the other sunk himself (другой = Месснер опустился; to sink).

The woman attempted to speak, but Womble turned upon her fiercely.

"You keep out of this," he cried.

In marked contrast was Messner's "Please don't intrude, Theresa."

What of her anger and pent feelings, her lungs were irritated into the dry, hacking cough, and with blood-suffused face and one hand clenched against her chest, she waited for the paroxysm to pass.

Womble looked gloomily at her, noting her cough.

"Something must be done," he said. "Yet her lungs can't stand the exposure. She can't travel till the temperature rises. And I'm not going to give her up."

Messner hemmed, cleared his throat, and hemmed again, semi- apologetically, and said, "I need some money."

Contempt showed instantly in Womble's face. At last, beneath him in vileness, had the other sunk himself.

"You've got a fat sack of dust (у вас есть толстый мешок пыли = золотого песка)," Messner went on (продолжал Месснер). "I saw you unload it from the sled (я видел, /как/ вы выгружали его с нарт)."

"How much do you want (сколько вы хотите)?" Womble demanded (просил Уомбл), with a contempt in his voice equal to that in his face (с презрением в его голосе, равным тому /презрению, что было/ на его лице).

"I made an estimate of the sack (я сделал оценку мешка), and I — ah — should say (и я — э-э — должен сказать) it weighed about twenty pounds (он весил около двадцати фунтов). What do you say we call it four thousand (что вы скажете, если это будет четыре тысячи; to call — звать, окликать; называть; считать)?"

"But it's all I've got, man (но это все, /что/ я имею = у меня есть, послушайте: «человек»)!" Womble cried out (выкрикнул Уомбл; to cry out — объявлять во всеуслышание; выкликать).

"You've got her (у вас есть она)," the other said soothingly (сказал другой /мужчина/ успокаивающе; to soothe — успокаивать, утешать; умиротворять; унимать). "She must be worth it (она должна быть стоящей этого = разве она не стоит этих денег). Think what I'm giving up (подумайте, чтό я уступаю/от чего отказываюсь). Surely it is a reasonable price (несомненно/конечно, это приемлемая/недорогая: «разумная» цена)."

"All right (хорошо)." Womble rushed across the floor to the gold-sack (Уомбл бросился на другую сторону пола = хижины к мешку с песком; across — через, сквозь; на ту сторону). "Can't put this deal through too quick for me (не можете /ли вы/ закончить/выполнить это дело очень быстро для меня = скорее бы покончить с этим делом; to put through), you — you little worm (вы — вы маленький червяк = ничтожество)!"

"But it's all I've got, man!" Womble cried out.

"You've got her," the other said soothingly. "She must be worth it. Think what I'm giving up. Surely it is a reasonable price."

"All right." Womble rushed across the floor to the gold-sack. "Can't put this deal through too quick for me, you — you little worm!"

"Now, there you err (ну, в этом вы ошибаетесь)," was the smiling rejoinder (был смеющийся ответ/возражение = с насмешкой возразил Месснер).
