M. Bouc and Dr. Constantine had started by trying to obey Poirot's instructions.	Мсье Бук и доктор Константин поначалу следовали наставлениям Пуаро.
They had endeavoured to see through a maze of conflicting particulars to a clear and outstanding solution.	Они пытались разобраться в путанице фактов и прийти к четкому, объясняющему все противоречия решению.
M. Bouc's thoughts had run something as follows:	Мысль мсье Бука шла примерно таким путем:
"Assuredly I must think.	"Безусловно, надо как следует подумать.
But as far as that goes I have already thought... Poirot obviously thinks that this English girl is mixed up in the matter.	Но ведь, по правде говоря, сколько можно думать... Пуаро определенно подозревает молодую англичанку.
I cannot help feeling that that is most unlikely... The English are extremely cold. Probably it is because they have no figures... But that is not the point.	Явно ошибается. Англичанки слишком хладнокровные... А все потому, что они такие тощие... Но не буду отвлекаться.
It seems that the Italian could not have done it - a pity. I suppose the English valet is not lying when he said the other never left the compartment?	Похоже, что это не итальянец, а жаль... Уж не врет ли лакей, когда говорит, что Фоскарелли не выходил из купе?
But why should he!	Но чего ради ему врать?
It is not easy to bribe the English; they are so unapproachable.	Англичан трудно подкупить - к ним не подступишься.
The whole thing is most unfortunate.	Вообще все сложилось до крайности неудачно.
I wonder when we shall get out of this.	Интересно, когда мы отсюда выберемся?
There must be some rescue work in progress.	Должно быть, какие-то спасательные работы все-таки ведутся.
They are so slow in these countries... it is hours before anyone thinks of doing anything.	Но на Балканах не любят спешить... Пока они спохватятся, немало времени пройдет.
And the police of these countries, they will be most trying to deal with - puffed up with importance, touchy, on their dignity.	Да и с их полицией не так-то просто договориться - они тут такие чванные, чуть что, лезут в бутылку: им все кажется, что к ним относятся без должного почтения.
They will make a grand affair of all this. It is not often that such a chance comes their way. It will be in all the newspapers..."	Они раздуют это дело так, что не обрадуешься. Воспользуются случаем, раструбят во всех газетах..."
And from there on, M. Bouc's thoughts went along a well-worn course which they had already traversed some hundred times.	С этого момента мысли мсье Бука снова пошли многажды проторенным путем.
Dr. Constantine's thoughts ran thus:	А доктор Константин думал:
"He is queer, this little man.	"Любопытный человечек.
A genius?	Кто он, гений?
Or a crank?	Или шарлатан?
Will he solve this mystery?	Разгадает он эту тайну?
Impossible - I can see no way out of it.	Вряд ли. Нет, это невозможно.
