As Dorothy gazed upon this in wonder and fear, the eyes turned slowly and looked at her sharply and steadily. Then the mouth moved, and Dorothy heard a voice say: "I am Oz, the Great and Terrible. Who are you, and why do you seek me?" It was not such an awful voice as she had expected to come from the big Head; so she took courage and answered: "I am Dorothy, the Small and Meek. I have come to you for help." The eyes looked at her thoughtfully for a full minute.
Then said the voice (затем голос сказал): "Where did you get the silver shoes (где ты взяла эти серебряные башмаки)?"
"I got them from the Wicked Witch of the East (я взяла их у Злой Ведьмы Востока), when my house fell on her and killed her (когда мой дом упал на нее и убил ее)," she replied.
"Where did you get the mark upon your forehead (где ты получила метку на лбу)?" continued the voice (продолжал голос).
"That is where the Good Witch of the North kissed me (/она появилась/ там, где Добрая Ведьма Севера поцеловала меня) when she bade me good-bye and sent me to you (когда она попрощалась со мной и отправила меня к тебе)," said the girl.
Again the eyes looked at her sharply (снова глаза внимательно посмотрели на нее), and they saw she was telling the truth (и они увидели, что она говорила правду). Then Oz asked (затем Оз спросил), "What do you wish me to do (что ты хочешь, чтобы я сделал)?"

"Send me back to Kansas, where my Aunt Em and Uncle Henry are (отправь меня назад, в Канзас, где /живут/ мои Тетушка Эм и Дядюшка Генри)," she answered earnestly (горячо: «серьезно» ответила она). "I don't like your country (мне не нравится твоя страна), although it is so beautiful (хотя она такая красивая). And I am sure Aunt Em will be dreadfully worried over my being away so long (и я уверена, что Тетушка Эм будет ужасно волноваться из-за моего отсутствия так долго)." The eyes winked three times (глаза моргнули три раза), and then they turned up to the ceiling (затем они повернулись /наверх/ к потолку) and down to the floor (и /вниз/ к полу) and rolled around so queerly (и завращались /вокруг/ так странно) that they seemed to see every part of the room (что казалось, они видят каждую часть комнаты). And at last they looked at Dorothy again (и наконец они снова взглянули на Дороти).
"Why should I do this for you (почему я должен сделать это для тебя)?" asked Oz.

"Because you are strong and I am weak (потому что ты сильный, а я слабая); because you are a Great Wizard and I am only a little girl (потому что ты — Великий Волшебник, а я только маленькая девочка)."
"But you were strong enough to kill the Wicked Witch of the East (но ты была достаточно сильной, чтобы убить Злую Ведьму Востока)," said Oz.
"That just happened (это произошло случайно: «это просто случилось»)," returned Dorothy simply (просто ответила Дороти); "I could not help it (я ничего не могла с этим поделать)."
"Well (хорошо)," said the Head, "I will give you my answer (я дам тебе свой ответ). You have no right to expect me to send you back to Kansas (ты не имеешь права ожидать от меня, что я отправлю тебя назад, в Канзас;
