Umid ila ming urindimki, yor bo‘lsang deb,Bu beqaror dilimga qaror bo‘lsang deb.Kel endi ishq eli g‘amxonasiga — budir umid,Bu g‘amli ko‘nglima shoyad mador bo‘lsang deb.Tilayman uyqusi yo‘q ko‘zlarim charog‘i bo‘lib,Umidli ko‘nglima hamdam nigor bo‘lsang deb.Menga yarim kechada uyqudan murod shudir,Ko‘zim yoshi kabi ko‘kraktumor bo‘lsang deb.Yurak aqiq labing ishvasi bilan qondur,Shikoyat aylar esam, g‘amgusor bo‘lsang deb.
Malohat iqlimi shohini qulgadur nozi,Bu ishda sendan umid — sulhkor bo‘lsang deb.Vazifa aylading ikki labingdan uch bo‘sa,Vazifani qil ado: Ol, xumor bo‘lsang! — deb.Go‘zallar ishq elini qo‘llagan chaman ichra,Umid ila boqaman menga yor bo‘lsang deb.Shaharda Hofiz o‘lub, arzimasman arpaga ham,Karamlaring kutaman g‘amgusor bo‘lsang deb.

Bordim saharda bog‘ sari gul terish uchun,Nogoh quloqqa keldi — chekar erdi bulbul un.
Bir gulning ishqiga u bo‘lib men kabi asir,G‘avg‘o qilar emish bu chamai ichra ushbu kun.Sayr aylar erdim ul chamanu bog‘ aro faqat,Uylar edim u bulbulu gul haqqida butun.Gul yor etib tikonni-yu, bulbulda yo‘q qaror,Na gulda o‘zgarish, na u bulbuldadir sukun.Bulbul fig‘oni qildi dilimga og‘ir asar,Qaytdim, chidolmadim juda holim bo‘lib zabun.Gulshanda gullar ochilar — aslo hisobi yo‘q,Qo‘ymas tikan balosi biror gul uzish uchun.
Hofiz, suyuggch umidini tutma zamonadin,Ming ayb bor, fazilatidir makr ila fusun.

O‘tparast dayrida ham men kabi yo‘q bir maftun,Bo‘ldi har joyda garov xirqayu daftar may uchun.Ayladim boda sotuvchi qo‘lida ming tavba:Yorsiz tomchi may ichmay, demayin bazmu o‘yin!Borladim ko‘z arig‘ini etagim birla agar,Koshki yonimga o‘tirtilgusi sarvi mavzun.Balki bu sir haqida sarv tili so‘zlag‘usi,Io‘qsa parshishda til yo‘q, o‘zi g‘oyatda zabun.
Menga boda kemasin tezda ketur, dilbarsizG‘amdan oqmoqda ko‘zim burchida nahri Jayxun.Qilma begona so‘zin yorga topinguchi menga.Yo‘q ishim o‘zga bilan — menga piyola may sun!Ranjima, nargis agar kulsa ko‘zing shevasidan,Yurmagay ko‘r izidan kimki, ko‘zi bo‘lsa butun.Juda yoqmish bu so‘zim — tong chog‘ida bir tarsoMaykada oldida nay, daf ila kuylardi bugun:Gar musulmonlik esa Hofiz tutib turgan ishi,Oh agar bo‘lsa bu kun orqasidan tonglasi kun!

The Voice Over

Maria Stepanova is one of the most powerful and distinctive voices of Russia's first post-Soviet literary generation. An award-winning poet and prose writer, she has also founded a major platform for independent journalism. Her verse blends formal mastery with a keen ear for the evolution of spoken language. As Russia's political climate has turned increasingly repressive, Stepanova has responded with engaged writing that grapples with the persistence of violence in her country's past and present. Some of her most remarkable recent work as a poet and essayist considers the conflict in Ukraine and the debasement of language that has always accompanied war. *The Voice Over* brings together two decades of Stepanova's work, showcasing her range, virtuosity, and creative evolution. Stepanova's poetic voice constantly sets out in search of new bodies to inhabit, taking established forms and styles and rendering them into something unexpected and strange. Recognizable patterns... The Voice Over brings together two decades of Stepanova's work, showcasing her range, virtuosity, and creative evolution. Stepanova's poetic voice constantly sets out in search of new bodies to inhabit, taking established forms and styles and rendering them into something unexpected and strange. Recognizable patterns of ballads, elegies, and war songs are transposed into a new key, infused with foreign strains, and juxtaposed with unlikely neighbors. As an essayist, Stepanova engages deeply with writers who bore witness to devastation and dramatic social change, as seen in searching pieces on W. G. Sebald, Marina Tsvetaeva, and Susan Sontag. Including contributions from ten translators, The Voice Over shows English-speaking readers why Stepanova is one of Russia's most acclaimed contemporary writers. Maria Stepanova is the author of over ten poetry collections as well as three books of essays and the documentary novel In Memory of Memory. She is the recipient of several Russian and international literary awards. Irina Shevelenko is professor of Russian in the Department of German, Nordic, and Slavic at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. With translations by: Alexandra Berlina, Sasha Dugdale, Sibelan Forrester, Amelia Glaser, Zachary Murphy King, Dmitry Manin, Ainsley Morse, Eugene Ostashevsky, Andrew Reynolds, and Maria Vassileva.
