We soon saw twinkling the fires of Berd.	Вскоре засверкали Бердские огни.
We were approaching the deep ravines which served as natural fortifications to the little settlement.	Мы подъехали к оврагам, естественным укреплениям слободы.
Sav?liitch, though keeping up to me tolerably well, did not give over his lamentable supplications.	Савельич от меня не отставал, не прерывая жалобных своих молений.
I was hoping to pass safely by this unfriendly place, when all at once I made out in the dark five peasants, armed with big sticks. It was an advance guard of Pugatch?fs camp.	Я надеялся объехать слободу благополучно, как вдруг увидел в сумраке прямо перед собой человек пять мужиков, вооруженных дубинами; это был передовой караул пугачевского пристанища.
They shouted to us -	Нас окликали.
"Who goes there?" Not knowing the pass-word, I wanted to pass them without reply, but in the same moment they surrounded me, and one of them seized my horse by the bridle.	Не зная пароля, я хотел молча проехать мимо их; но они меня тотчас окружили, и один из них схватил лошадь мою за узду.
I drew my sword, and struck the peasant on the head. His high cap saved his life; still, he staggered, and let go the bridle.	Я выхватил саблю, и ударил мужика по голове; шапка спасла его, однако он зашатался и выпустил из рук узду.
The others were frightened, and jumped aside. Taking advantage of their scare, I put spurs to my horse, and dashed off at full gallop.	Прочие смутились и отбежали; я воспользовался этой минутою, пришпорил лошадь и поскакал.
The fast increasing darkness of the night might have saved me from any more difficulties, when, looking back, I discovered that Sav?liitch was no longer with me.	Темнота приближающейся ночи могла избавить меня от всякой опасности, как вдруг, оглянувшись, увидел я, что Савельича со мною не было.
The poor old man with his lame horse had not been able to shake off the robbers.	Бедный старик на своей хромой лошади не мог ускакать от разбойников.

After waiting a few minutes and becoming certain he had been stopped, I turned my horse's head to go to his help.	Подождав его несколько минут, и удостоверясь в том, что он задержан, я поворотил лошадь и отправился его выручать.
As I approached the ravine I heard from afar confused shouts, and the voice of my Sav?liitch.	Подъезжая к оврагу, услышал я издали шум, крики и голос моего Савельича.
Quickening my pace, I soon came up with the peasants of the advance guard who had stopped me a few minutes previously.	Я поехал скорее, и вскоре очутился снова между караульными мужиками, остановившими меня несколько минут тому назад.
