POSTMASTER.	Почтмейстер.
I don't know myself.	Сам не знаю, неестественная сила побудила.
A supernatural power moved me. I had already summoned a courier to send it off by express; but I was overcome by a greater curiosity than I have ever felt in my life.	Призвал было уже курьера, с тем чтобы отправить его с эштафетой, - но любопытство такое одолело, какого еще никогда не чувствовал.
"I can't, I can't," I hear a voice telling me. "I can't." But it pulled me and pulled me.	Не могу, не могу! слышу, что не могу! тянет, так вот и тянет!
In one ear I heard,	В одном ухе так вот и слышу:
"Don't open the letter. You will die like a chicken," and in the other it was just as if the devil were whispering,	"Эй, не распечатывай! пропадешь, как курица"; а в другом словно бес какой шепчет:
"Open it, open it."	"Распечатай, распечатай, распечатай!"
And when I cracked the sealing wax, I felt as if I were on fire; and when I opened the letter, I froze, upon my word, I froze.	И как придавил сургуч - по жилам огонь, а распечатал - мороз, ей-Богу мороз.
And my hands trembled, and everything whirled around me.	И руки дрожат, и все помутилось.
GOVERNOR.	Городничий.
But how did you dare to open it? The letter of so powerful a personage?	Да как же вы осмелились распечатать письмо такой уполномоченной особы?
POSTMASTER.	Почтмейстер.
But that's just the point-he's neither powerful nor a personage.	В том-то и штука, что он не уполномоченный и не особа!
GOVERNOR.	Городничий.
Then what is he in your opinion?	Что ж он, по-вашему, такое?
POSTMASTER.	Почтмейстер.
He's neither one thing nor another. The devil knows what he is.	Ни се ни то; черт знает что такое!
GOVERNOR [furiously].	Городничий (запальчиво).
How neither one thing nor another?	Как ни се ни то?
How do you dare to call him neither one thing nor another? And the devil knows what besides?	Как вы смеете назвать его ни тем ни сем, да еще и черт знает чем?
I'll put you under arrest.	Я вас под арест...
POSTMASTER.	Почтмейстер.
Who-you?	Кто? Вы?
GOVERNOR.	Городничий.
Yes, I.	Да я!
POSTMASTER.	Почтмейстер.
