Suddenly he arose, and, bidding D'Arnot good night as he had learned to do, threw himself upon the couch of ferns that had been Jane Porter's.	Неожиданно он встал и, пожелав д'Арно доброй ночи, как тот научил его, бросился на постель из папоротников, на которой спала Джэн Портер.
D'Arnot extinguished the lamp, and lay down upon the cot.	Д'Арно потушил лампу и тоже лег.
For a week they did little but rest, D'Arnot coaching Tarzan in French.	Целую неделю они почти только и делали, что отдыхали и д'Арно учил Тарзана французскому языку.
At the end of that time the two men could converse quite easily.	К концу недели они уже могли кое-как объясняться.
One night, as they were sitting within the cabin before retiring, Tarzan turned to D'Arnot.	Раз, поздно вечером, когда они сидели в хижине, собираясь ложиться спать, Тарзан бросился к д'Арно.
"Where is America?" he said.	-- Где Америка? -- спросил он.
D'Arnot pointed toward the northwest.	Д'Арно показал на северо-запад.
"Many thousands of miles across the ocean," he replied.	-- Во многих тысячах миль за океаном.
"Why?"	Для чего вам это?
"I am going there."	-- Я собираюсь туда.
D'Arnot shook his head.	Д'Арно покачал головой.
"It is impossible, my friend," he said.	-- Это невозможно, друг мой, -- сказал он.
Tarzan rose, and, going to one of the cupboards, returned with a well-thumbed geography.	Тарзан встал и, подойдя к одному из шкафов, вернулся с основательно зачитанной географией в руках.
Turning to a map of the world, he said:	Раскрыв карту всего мира, он сказал:
"I have never quite understood all this; explain it to me, please."	-- Я никогда не мог хорошенько понять всего этого; объясните, пожалуйста!
When D'Arnot had done so, showing him that the blue represented all the water on the earth, and the bits of other colors the continents and islands, Tarzan asked him to point out the spot where they now were.	Д'Арно исполнил его просьбу, сказав, что синяя краска означает всю воду на земле, а пятна других цветов -- континенты и острова. Тарзан попросил указать место, где они теперь находятся.
D'Arnot did so.	Д'Арно это сделал.
"Now point out America," said Tarzan.	-- Теперь укажите, где Америка,-- сказал Тарзан.
And as D'Arnot placed his finger upon North America, Tarzan smiled and laid his palm upon the page, spanning the great ocean that lay between the two continents.	И когда д'Арно дотронулся пальцем до Северной Америки, Тарзан улыбнулся и, положив на страницу ладонь, измерил ею Атлантический океан, лежащий между обоими материками.
"You see it is not so very far," he said; "scarce the width of my hand."	-- Вы видите, это не далеко; моя рука шире!
