"What papers?"	- Какие документы? - спросил приезжий из Лукки.
"The certificate of your marriage with Oliva Corsinari, and the register of your child's birth."	- Да ваше брачное свидетельство и метрику сына.
"The register of my child's birth?"	- Метрику сына?
"The register of the birth of Andrea Cavalcanti-of your son; is not his name Andrea?"	- Метрику Андреа Кавальканти, вашего сына; разве его зовут не Андреа?
"I believe so," said the major.	- Кажется, да, - сказал приезжий из Лукки.

The major passed his hand across his brow.	Приезжий из Лукки почесал лоб.
"Ah, per Bacco, indispensable, were they?"	- A, per Вассо! - сказал он. - Необходимы!
"Certainly they were; supposing there were to be doubts raised as to the validity of your marriage or the legitimacy of your child?"	- Разумеется, а вдруг здесь возникнут какие-нибудь сомнения в том, действителен ли ваш брак, законно ли рождение вашего сына?
"True," said the major, "there might be doubts raised."	- Вы правы, могут возникнуть сомнения.
