He has taken the bread out of our mouths by quartering soldiers on us, so that you might as well put your neck in a noose.	Постоем совсем заморил, хоть в петлю полезай.
He doesn't treat you as you deserve.	Не по поступкам поступает.
He catches hold of your beard and says,	Схватит за бороду, говорит:
"Oh, you Tartar!"	"Ах ты, татарин!"
Upon my word, if we had shown him any disrespect, but we obey all the laws and regulations. We don't mind giving him what his wife and daughter need for their clothes, but no, that's not enough.	Ей-Богу! Если бы, то есть, чем-нибудь не уважили его, а то мы уж порядок всегда исполняем: что следует на платья супружнице его и дочке - мы против этого не стоим.
So help me God!	Нет, вишь ты, ему всего этого мало - ей-ей!
He comes to our shop and takes whatever his eyes fall on.	Придет в лавку и, что ни попадет, все берет.
He sees a piece of cloth and says,	Сукна увидит штуку, говорит:
"Oh, my friends, that's a fine piece of goods. Take it to my house."	"Э, милый, это хорошее суконцо: снеси-ка его ко мне".
So we take it to his house. It will be almost forty yards.	Ну и несешь, а в штуке-то будет без мала аршин пятьдесят.

When you see him coming you hide everything in the shop.	Так все и припрятываешь в лавке, когда его завидишь.
It isn't only that he wants a few delicacies and fineries. He takes every bit of trash, too-prunes that have been in the barrel seven years and that even the boy in my shop would not eat, and he grabs a fist full.	То есть, не то уж говоря, чтоб какую деликатность, всякую дрянь берет: чернослив такой, что лет уже по семи лежит в бочке, что у меня сиделец не будет есть, а он целую горсть туда запустит.
His name day is St. Anthony's, and you'd think there's nothing else left in the world to bring him and that he doesn't want any more. But no, you must give him more. He says St. Onufry's is also his name day.	Именины его бывают на Антона, и уж, кажись, всего нанесешь, ни в чем не нуждается; нет, ему еще подавай: говорит, и на Онуфрия его именины.
What's to be done? You have to take things to him on St. Onufry's day, too.	Что делать? и на Онуфрия несешь.
